Applications
These frames are the standard U.S. military-issue "GI glasses" spectacle front, procured through the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) for use by active-duty service members requiring corrective lenses. Rochester Optical Mfg. Co. was one of the primary suppliers of military optical frames to the U.S. Armed Forces from the mid-20th century onward, producing frames to MIL-SPEC standards. The iconic thick cellulose acetate construction and squared horn-rimmed profile are characteristic of military spectacle fronts from the 1970s through the early 1990s — the same design colloquially known as "BCGs" (birth control glasses) among service members. Today these frames are collected as military surplus memorabilia, sought by vintage eyewear enthusiasts, used by opticians fitting vintage-style prescriptions, and acquired by reenactors and historians for period-accurate military impressions. Cellulose acetate frames from this era are also valued in the vintage eyewear market for their durability and classic aesthetic.
This Rochester Optical GI military spectacle front (NSN 6540-01-146-7799) is new old stock — manufactured in September 1989 under DLA contract DLA120-88-C-4614 and never worn. The frame is in excellent cosmetic condition with no cracks, chips, or discoloration visible in the photos. It comes stored in its original sleeve. As new old stock from 1989, it has been in long-term storage, so buyers should assess material flexibility and fit suitability for their own needs. Frame front only — no temples or ear pieces are included. Please view our photo set and contact us if you have any questions. Please note: We have multiple units in stock — yours may not be the one shown in the photos, however, it will be similar in condition and function.
