The PTC Instruments Model 409 is a Shore D scale durometer hardness tester mounted on a PTC Model 320 durometer stand. Durometers measure the resistance of materials to permanent indentation, giving a standardized hardness reading on a 0–100 scale. The Shore D scale is specifically designed for harder materials and uses a sharper indenter under greater force than the Shore A scale.

Applications
Shore D durometers are standard instruments in plastics, polymer, and materials testing laboratories. The Model 409 is suited for measuring the hardness of hard plastics, formica laminates, epoxy resins, plexiglass (acrylic sheet), and similarly rigid polymer materials. The Model 320 stand provides consistent, repeatable load application by guiding the durometer onto the specimen at a controlled rate and angle — eliminating the variability of hand-held measurements and making it the preferred setup for formal QC testing per ASTM D2240. These instruments are commonly used in plastics manufacturing, composites fabrication, research and development labs, and incoming inspection stations where material hardness must be verified against a specification. The Shore D scale remains in active use today alongside Shore A (for rubbers and soft elastomers) as the two primary scales of the ASTM D2240 standard.
This PTC Instruments Model 409 Shore D Durometer with Model 320 stand has been inspected and appears to be in good used condition. The unit was pulled from a working environment where it was previously in use. The durometer dial face and indenter are intact, and the stand hardware including the vertical column, sample platform, and adjustment clamps all appear complete and undamaged. Normal handling wear is present on the stand. A calibration label is visible on the base showing a cal date of 2-1-91 — recalibration before use in a precision measurement environment is recommended.
