Applications

PS/2 connectors use the 6-pin Mini-DIN interface and were introduced by IBM with the PS/2 line of personal computers in 1987, becoming the dominant keyboard and mouse connection standard throughout the late 1980s and 1990s. Extension cables like this one allow a PS/2 keyboard or mouse to be positioned farther from the host system than the original cable length permits — useful in rack-mount setups, KVM configurations, point-of-sale systems, industrial PCs, and older workstations where the PS/2 ports are recessed or difficult to reach. While USB has largely replaced PS/2 in modern consumer hardware, PS/2 keyboards and mice remain in active use with legacy industrial equipment, CNC controllers, older servers, and systems where USB polling latency is a concern. Many administrators and technicians who maintain older infrastructure still need PS/2 extension cables for periodic access or KVM switching.
