Description

Promise Technology Ultra33 9709-00 Rev B PCI IDE Controller Card ATA-33

The Promise Ultra33 is a PCI IDE controller card that adds two additional ATA-33 (Ultra DMA Mode 2) IDE channels to a desktop PC. It was designed to offload IDE traffic from the motherboard's built-in controller and to support the then-new Ultra DMA/33 standard, delivering burst transfer rates up to 33 MB/s — a significant step up from PIO Mode 4 drives of the era. This example is assembly number 9709-00, Revision B.

Applications

The Promise Ultra33 was a popular upgrade card in the late 1990s, when Ultra DMA/33 drives became common but many motherboards shipped with older PIO-only or DMA/16 controllers. It was widely used to add high-speed IDE support to Pentium and early Pentium II systems, and to connect additional hard drives or optical drives beyond the two channels the motherboard provided. Today these cards see use in vintage PC restoration and retro computing projects, where builders want to run period-correct hardware with properly supported ATA-33 drives. The card works with Windows 95/98/Me, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 2000 using Promise's proprietary drivers.
