Applications
Electrodeless Discharge Lamps are used as primary light sources in atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) instruments. In AAS, a lamp emitting the characteristic spectral lines of a target element is shone through a sample atomized in a flame or graphite furnace; the degree of absorption at the element's specific wavelength quantifies its concentration. EDLs are particularly well suited for volatile elements like cadmium, arsenic, selenium, and mercury, where they provide higher intensity and longer operational life than hollow cathode lamps. Cadmium analysis by AAS is common in environmental monitoring (water and soil contamination), occupational health testing, food safety, and industrial quality control. This lamp is compatible with Perkin Elmer AAS systems that accept the EDL System II driver and standard BNC-connected EDL lamps, including the AAnalyst and older AA series spectrometers.
