Description

Perkin-Elmer Cetus DNA Thermal Cycler PCR Thermocycler 120VAC 50/60Hz

The Perkin-Elmer Cetus DNA Thermal Cycler is an early-generation benchtop PCR thermocycler designed for automated polymerase chain reaction (PCR) cycling in molecular biology research. The unit features a programmable keypad with a two-line green fluorescent LCD display, allowing users to define and store thermo-cycle files with custom temperature steps and hold times. A 48-well sample block provides capacity for a standard PCR tube run. Labeled "for research use only," this is a classic instrument from the era when Perkin-Elmer Cetus pioneered commercial PCR thermocycler technology.

Applications

The Perkin-Elmer Cetus DNA Thermal Cycler is one of the earliest commercially produced PCR thermocyclers, dating from the late 1980s to early 1990s — the period when Perkin-Elmer and Cetus Corporation jointly introduced PCR to the broader scientific community. PCR thermocyclers automate the repeated heating and cooling cycles needed to amplify specific DNA sequences: denaturation at high temperature, primer annealing at a lower temperature, and extension by DNA polymerase at an intermediate temperature. This instrument type became a cornerstone of molecular biology labs worldwide and is used in applications including gene cloning, genetic diagnostics, forensic analysis, and basic research. Vintage Perkin-Elmer Cetus units are sought by labs needing a low-cost, simple thermocycler for established protocols, as well as by collectors and institutions preserving the history of PCR technology. Intended for research use only, not for clinical or diagnostic applications.

Condition: Used
This Perkin-Elmer Cetus DNA Thermal Cycler has been pulled from a working laboratory environment where it was previously in active use. The unit has been visually inspected and photographed. The front panel, keypad, and LCD display appear clean and intact. The sample block lid opens and closes properly and the 48-well sample block is present and shows no obvious damage. The rear panel includes the IEC power inlet, F1 and F3 fuse holders, and the DB-25 serial port — all appear intact. The housing shows normal cosmetic wear consistent with lab use. It has not been powered up or tested at our facility. Please review all photos carefully and contact us with any questions before purchasing.
