Description
Perkin-Elmer 023 Strip Chart Recorder 1mV-5V 1-30cm/min Lab Benchtop Single Pen
The Perkin-Elmer 023 is a benchtop single-pen strip chart recorder designed to continuously plot analog electrical signals on moving paper chart rolls. It accepts a wide input range of 1 mV to 5 V and offers selectable chart speeds from 1 to 30 cm/min, allowing users to scale the time axis to match the dynamics of the process or instrument being monitored. A classic instrument of the type widely used alongside laboratory analytical equipment, it provides a permanent paper record of signal variation over time.

Applications
Strip chart recorders like the Perkin-Elmer 023 are used in laboratory and industrial settings to create a continuous paper record of an analog signal over time — essentially a printed graph of how a voltage or current changes during an experiment, process, or instrument run. In analytical laboratories, they were a standard output device paired with instruments such as spectrophotometers, chromatographs, titrators, pH meters, and electrochemical analyzers, producing the chromatogram or absorbance trace directly on paper. Perkin-Elmer manufactured both the analytical instruments and their companion recorders, so the 023 was commonly deployed alongside Perkin-Elmer UV/Vis spectrophotometers and other PE lab instruments from the same era. These recorders date from the 1970s and 1980s, before digital data acquisition and PC-based software became standard in the lab. Despite their age, they remain useful wherever a simple, self-contained paper trace is preferred — legacy instrument maintenance, vintage lab setups, and educational demonstrations — and they are still sought out by labs running original Perkin-Elmer instrumentation that outputs an analog voltage signal.
This Perkin-Elmer 023 Strip Chart Recorder was removed from a working laboratory where it was actively in use, and has been tested and confirmed to be in working condition. The unit powers on and operates as expected. The housing shows some yellowing and light surface wear on the white top cover, and minor scuffing on the black base — typical for lab equipment of this age. A roll of chart paper is loaded and visible. No pen is included. Please view our photo set and contact us if you have any questions.
