Applications
Ozumi was a Japanese optical instrument manufacturer active from roughly the 1950s through the 1970s, producing compound microscopes sold under both its own name and through OEM partnerships with Unitron Instrument Company, a major American distributor of Japanese optics during that era. Instruments like this one were standard equipment in university biology and histology labs, medical offices, and research settings throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Compound microscopes of this type use transmitted light (from the substage mirror or a lamp) and are used for viewing thin-section prepared slides — biological specimens, tissue sections, bacteria, or cellular samples — at magnifications from around 150X (10X objective × 15X eyepiece) up to 1200X (80X × 15X). The camera port allows a 35mm or digital camera adapter to be attached for photomicrography without removing the eyepiece. This configuration of mixed objectives — apochromat, achromat, and flat-field — was typical of general-purpose research instruments of the period. Today these vintage Ozumi/Unitron instruments are sought by collectors, educators, and hobbyists who appreciate their solid brass-and-steel construction, coated Japanese optics, and compatibility with the still-standard 23mm DIN eyepiece diameter.
This Ozumi Tokyo monocular compound microscope shows the normal wear expected of a vintage lab instrument. The black enamel finish on the base feet has some paint chipping, and the arm shows minor paint loss and silvering near the focus mechanism — all typical for its age. The substage mirror has some dust and minor debris around the mount. The body tube, nosepiece, stage, and focus knobs all appear intact and move freely. The Unitron Ke15X eyepiece has a clean, blue-coated lens element with no visible damage to the optics. The four objectives — Apochromat 10X, Bausch & Lomb 40X, Ozumi M45, and Unitron Coated MPL80X — are all present on the nosepiece. The camera port is present. This microscope has not been bench-tested at our facility, but it was pulled from a working environment where it was previously in use.
