Applications
Orckit Communications was an Israeli DSL equipment manufacturer that produced ADSL and VDSL gear primarily for telephone companies and ISPs during the late 1990s and early 2000s, when ADSL was the dominant broadband technology deployed over existing copper telephone networks. The Orfast (ORCKIT FastInternet) line of ADSL ATURs was used at the subscriber premises end of a DSL loop, connecting to the ISP's DSLAM at the central office or remote terminal. The ATUR received the downstream ADSL signal from the telephone line and presented a standard 10BASE-T Ethernet port for the customer's router or computer. Units like this were deployed by carriers and ISPs in small-business and residential installs during the early broadband rollout era. Today, this type of standalone external ADSL ATUR is legacy equipment, largely superseded by integrated DSL routers, but it remains of interest to network historians, vintage networking collectors, and anyone maintaining older broadband infrastructure or DSL lab test setups. The V.24 (RS-232-compatible) management port on this unit allowed local configuration and diagnostic access — a common feature on carrier-class CPE of the period.
