Applications

The Motorola 650 ISDN modem was designed for small office and remote site connectivity over ISDN BRI lines in the mid-to-late 1990s, when ISDN was widely deployed as a higher-speed alternative to analog dial-up for Internet access, WAN links, and LAN-to-LAN bridging. The U-interface port connects directly to the ISDN network termination point provided by the telephone company, while the two POTS ports allow standard analog phones or fax machines to share the same physical ISDN line. The DATA 1 (RJ-45) and DATA 2 (DB25) ports provide connectivity for routers, workstations, or other DTE equipment. The 650 Series was part of Motorola's broader Network Access Products family, which included the Vanguard router line and the 6500/6520/6560 access servers. ISDN BRI equipment of this type is now largely obsolete in North America, where ISDN has been decommissioned by most carriers, but units remain in use in legacy enterprise environments, certain international markets, and among collectors of late-1990s networking hardware.
