Applications

This type of wrap-around canvas field splint was issued to US military medics and corpsmen for battlefield immobilization of fractures and injuries to the extremities, spine, and neck. The three-part system — main splint, extension section, and cuff — allowed the medic to configure the device for left or right extremities or for cervical immobilization with a simple transfer of components. The traction bar at the distal end provided rigid support, while the antirotation unit at the proximal end prevented rotation of the injured limb during transport and evacuation. As described in the included Operating Instruction Manual, the splint was designed to be applied without removing the casualty from the field and without requiring removal for X-ray. This is a piece of mid-20th century US military field medical history and is collected today by military surplus enthusiasts, historians, reenactors, and prop departments. It is not suitable for any actual medical or clinical application and is offered solely as a collectible artifact.
