Description
Mattson-Garvin 220 Microbiological Slit-to-Agar Air Sampler Rotating Media 1 CFM
The Mattson-Garvin Model 220 is a benchtop microbiological air sampler that uses a slit-to-agar impaction method to capture airborne viable particles onto a rotating agar culture plate. Air is drawn through a precision 0.152 mm slit at 1 cubic foot per minute and impinged onto an agar surface positioned 2–3 mm below the slit. After sampling, the plate is incubated and colonies counted, yielding a direct result in viable particles per unit volume of air — no dilution or plating steps required.

Applications
Slit-to-agar air samplers like the Mattson-Garvin 220 are standard instruments for microbiological air quality monitoring in environments where airborne contamination control is critical. The rotating agar plate design spreads the captured particle load evenly across the plate surface over the sampling period, making time-concentration analysis possible from a single plate. These instruments are used in pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities for environmental monitoring and cleanroom validation, food and beverage processing plants, animal care and biosafety laboratories, hospital and healthcare settings, and industrial clean room efficiency studies. The slit-to-agar method is one of the oldest and most established active air sampling techniques, valued for its simplicity, direct culture results, and compatibility with standard microbiological culture plates — making it widely accepted in regulatory and quality-assurance settings. The Mattson-Garvin M/G 220 design dates from the mid-to-late twentieth century and remains a recognized instrument in legacy cleanroom and pharmaceutical QA programs.
This Mattson-Garvin 220 Microbiological Slit-to-Agar Air Sampler has been inspected and function-tested by our staff. The unit produces a vacuum and all functions tested good. There are small cracks in the clear Lexan dome cover — these are noted in the photos and should be reviewed carefully before purchasing. The rest of the instrument, including the programmable digital timer, rotating media drive, Dwyer flowmeter, and toggle switch with lighted indicator, are in good working order. The Pall Ultipor N66 0.2-micron disposable filter assembly is attached at the rear. Normal cosmetic wear is present on the enclosure consistent with lab use.
