Applications
Magna Tech magnetic film recorders were a standard piece of professional cinema post-production equipment from the 1950s through the 1980s, used in dubbing stages, re-recording suites, and film editing facilities. The MR-436-3 records and plays back magnetically striped or full-coat magnetic film — the medium used to carry multi-track audio in sync with picture before digital audio workstations became industry standard. These machines were used alongside flatbed editing tables, Moviola upright editors, and interlock systems in Hollywood and independent film production facilities. The companion Type 69B amplifier drives the record/reproduce electronics for the magnetic heads. Today, Magna Tech recorders are sought by film archives, restoration facilities, and collectors working with legacy 16mm and 35mm magnetic film elements, as well as cinematography schools and museums preserving analog film workflows.
This Magna Tech MR-436-3 Magnetic Film Recorder has been inspected and appears to be in used condition consistent with its age. The unit shows general surface wear on the white-painted chassis, and the internal wiring and mechanical components are visible and intact. The film transport mechanism, motor assembly, and magnetic heads are present. The Type 69B amplifier and a set of multi-pin audio cable harnesses are included. This unit has not been powered up or tested at our facility, but it was pulled from a working environment where it was previously in use.
