Applications

Konarka Power Plastic cells are organic thin-film photovoltaic devices — a technology developed in the early-to-mid 2000s as an alternative to conventional crystalline silicon and amorphous thin-film solar. Rather than semiconductor wafers or vacuum-deposited films, Power Plastic uses organic photo-reactive polymers that can be printed or coated onto flexible plastic, much like printing ink. This makes the cells extremely thin (under 1mm) and fully flexible. The Model 110, at approximately 0.5W and 4.0V, is suited for powering or trickle-charging small electronics: sensors, RFID devices, handheld gadgets, educational DIY solar projects, and embedded low-power applications in wearables or portable devices. Because the organic photovoltaic material responds to diffuse and indoor light (not only direct sunlight), these cells work in conditions where conventional silicon cells perform poorly — fluorescent or LED office lighting, overcast outdoor environments, and partially shaded installations. The 10 Series panels can be connected in series to increase voltage or in parallel to increase current, making them scalable for custom project requirements. Konarka Technologies (based in Lowell, MA) was a pioneer in printed organic solar technology before ceasing operations in 2012; this remaining new-old-stock inventory represents one of the few opportunities to obtain genuine Power Plastic cells for research, prototyping, or collectible interest.
