Applications

The DS500-ST/B is an external SCSI storage tower designed for use with SCSI-based workstations and servers that require expanded disk capacity beyond their internal bay count. It connects to a host system via a 16-bit Wide SCSI host adapter and presents the installed drives directly to the host's SCSI bus. This type of enclosure was commonly paired with high-end Unix workstations, Windows NT/2000 servers, and professional graphics or video editing systems in the late 1990s and early 2000s — an era when LVD Ultra2 SCSI was the performance storage interface of choice before SATA and SAS became standard. The dual redundant hot-swap power supplies make it suitable for environments where uptime was critical, allowing a failed PSU to be swapped without powering down the array. Today these enclosures see continued use in legacy SCSI infrastructure, data recovery operations, and vintage computing setups that rely on SCSI drives.
