Applications
The Iomega Zip drive was one of the most widely used removable storage solutions of the mid-1990s through the early 2000s. The 100MB Zip disk offered a dramatic capacity increase over the standard 1.44MB floppy, making Zip drives a popular choice for backup, file transfer, and portable storage in both home and office environments. The ATAPI/IDE internal version was commonly factory-installed in desktop PCs of that era — including Dell OEM systems — as well as integrated into workstations, graphics stations, and publishing systems. Zip drives saw broad use in creative fields such as graphic design, prepress, and photography, where large files needed to move between workstations without a network. The format was eventually superseded by CD-RW drives, USB flash storage, and broadband file transfer, but Zip drives remain relevant for legacy data recovery, archiving, and maintaining older systems that relied on the format.
