Description

Iomega Bernoulli Box II 44 B144X-UNISYS SCSI Removable Cartridge Drive 50-Pin

The Iomega Bernoulli Box II 44 B144X-UNISYS is a desktop external SCSI removable cartridge disk drive produced under the UNISYS OEM label. It uses Iomega's Bernoulli technology -- a system in which a flexible magnetic disk cartridge spins at high speed, using the Bernoulli effect to draw the flexible disk into close proximity with the read/write head. This approach gave Bernoulli drives inherent resistance to head crashes, a meaningful advantage over conventional rigid-disk technology of the same era. This unit houses the Iomega 150 MultiDisk drive mechanism and connects to a host via a 50-pin Centronics SCSI-1/SCSI-2 interface, with two rear SCSI ports enabling daisy-chain configurations.

Applications

The Iomega Bernoulli Box II was a high-capacity removable-media storage solution aimed at workstations, small businesses, and departmental computing environments in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The Bernoulli cartridge system was used for data backup, file transfer between sites, and secure removable storage in environments where hard drive failure risk was a concern -- the flexible-disk design made head crashes far less likely than with conventional rigid drives. This B144X-UNISYS variant was supplied by UNISYS as OEM-branded storage for their workstation and minicomputer product lines, connecting via SCSI to UNISYS systems and other SCSI-equipped workstations and servers of the period. Bernoulli drives competed directly with SyQuest removable cartridge drives in professional and creative markets. Today these units are sought primarily by collectors, retrocomputing enthusiasts, and organizations needing to recover data from legacy Bernoulli 44MB or 150 MultiDisk cartridges.

Condition: For Parts or Not Working
This Iomega Bernoulli Box II 44 B144X-UNISYS Removable Cartridge Disk Drive is being sold as-is for parts or repair. A power-on test was performed, but no further functional testing was done and functionality is not guaranteed. Cosmetically the unit is in fair shape for its age, with the light yellowing on the plastic housing typical of equipment from this era. Both rear 50-pin Centronics SCSI connectors are present and appear intact. The IEC power inlet is undamaged, the SCSI ID is set to 0, and the termination switch is accessible on the rear panel.
