Applications
The Pentium III Xeon Slot 2 processor was Intel's workstation and entry-level server CPU of the late 1990s, introduced in 1998 to succeed the Pentium II Xeon. It targeted dual-processor systems built around Intel's 440GX and 450NX chipsets, used in high-end workstations from manufacturers such as HP, Dell, Compaq, and IBM, as well as in Xeon-based server platforms of that era. The Slot 2 cartridge form factor — physically larger than the desktop Slot 1 — carried a full-speed L2 cache directly on the processor die, which gave it a significant performance edge over contemporaneous desktop CPUs for compute-intensive tasks such as 3D rendering, CAD, scientific computing, and database workloads.
