Applications
The Pentium II Deschutes generation was Intel's mainstream desktop and workstation processor from 1998, replacing the earlier Klamath-core Pentium II with better power efficiency and improved thermal characteristics from the smaller 0.25-micron die. The SL356 at 350MHz was among the faster SKUs available on Slot 1 boards, compatible with Intel 440BX, 440LX, and 440EX chipset motherboards that supported a 100MHz FSB. These processors powered a wide range of late-1990s desktop PCs, entry-level workstations, and servers, and were commonly used in systems running Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, and early Windows 2000. Today the SL356 is sought by vintage PC enthusiasts restoring Slot 1 systems, as well as collectors of late-1990s Intel hardware. The SECC2 packaging was a refinement over the earlier SECC cartridge, reducing cost and exposing the processor die directly rather than enclosing it in a full plastic housing.
