Applications
The Intel Pentium II was Intel's mainstream desktop and workstation processor family from the late 1990s, succeeding the original Pentium Pro. The Slot 1 form factor used a proprietary SEC cartridge that plugged into a vertical slot on the motherboard — a design Intel used from the Pentium II through the early Pentium III era before returning to socket-based packaging with the Coppermine core. The 400MHz Deschutes-core variant (built on Intel's 0.25-micron process) was one of the faster members of the PII lineup and paired with Intel 440BX, 440LX, and 440EX chipset motherboards, which were common in late-1990s ATX desktops and workstations running Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, and early Windows 2000. Today these processors are sought by vintage PC builders and collectors restoring period-correct systems from the Windows 98/NT era.
This Intel Pentium II 400MHz Slot 1 processor (stepping SL357) was pulled from a working system and has been inspected. It appears to be in good used condition. The SEC cartridge shows normal wear consistent with prior installation. The attached Aavid ball-bearing fan and heatsink are intact and the fan spins freely.
