Description

Intel A80386DX-20 SX217 386DX CPU 20MHz PGA132 Socket Processor i386

The Intel A80386DX-20 (sSpec SX217) is a 20MHz 386DX processor in a PGA132 ceramic package. It is a full 32-bit CPU — 32-bit internal registers and a 32-bit external data bus — distinguishing it from the 386SX, which used a narrower 16-bit external bus. This unit carries the gold-contact PGA132 pin array used in 386-era desktop motherboards.

Applications

The Intel 386DX was Intel's mainstream 32-bit desktop processor from its introduction in 1985 through the early 1990s, succeeding the 16-bit 286 and predating the 486. At 20MHz, this variant sits in the middle of the 386DX speed range (which ran from 16MHz up to 40MHz). The 386DX was used in a wide range of IBM-compatible AT-class desktop machines and powered MS-DOS and early Windows 3.x systems. It introduced 32-bit protected mode and virtual 8086 mode to mainstream PCs, laying the groundwork for 32-bit operating systems. Today, the 386DX is sought by vintage PC restorers and collectors rebuilding late-1980s to early-1990s IBM-compatible systems, as well as by hobbyists running period-correct DOS and early Windows setups. Compatible motherboards typically used the Socket 1 or direct PGA132 footprint and were paired with a 387 math coprocessor socket for floating-point work.
