Applications

This drive was sold as an IBM Options upgrade for ThinkPad laptop computers, providing CD-ROM read capability for systems without a built-in optical drive or as a replacement for a failing unit. The ThinkPad Options line was IBM's official accessory and upgrade program, ensuring compatibility with ThinkPad portables of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Slim IDE/ATAPI CD-ROM drives of this type were standard equipment in the ThinkPad T, A, and X series modular bays during that period. While newer machines have largely moved to USB-based or slot-loading optical drives, these slim IDE units remain in demand for legacy ThinkPad maintenance, repair, and restoration.
