Applications
IBM's UltraBay system was introduced in the mid-to-late 1990s to give ThinkPad laptops a modular bay that could accept different drives — DVD-ROM, CD-RW, floppy, or a second battery — without requiring a separate external drive. This DVD-ROM module was used with ThinkPad models that featured a compatible UltraBay slot, such as the ThinkPad 600, 770, and related late-1990s series. The UltraBay format was a significant feature of IBM's ThinkPad line of that era, allowing users to reconfigure their laptop's optical or storage capability in the field. Today these drives are sought by collectors and users maintaining vintage ThinkPad systems, as well as by anyone needing a period-correct replacement module for a compatible ThinkPad chassis.
This IBM ThinkPad UltraBay DVD-ROM Drive (ASM P/N 05K9065, FRU 05K9066) is in used condition and was pulled from a working ThinkPad laptop environment. The drive has not been powered up or tested at our facility. The black plastic housing shows light surface wear consistent with normal laptop use — the bezel and casing are intact with no cracks or broken tabs visible.
