Description
IBM 9331-011 8-Inch External Floppy Drive 1.2MB YD-180 1619726 50/60Hz 100-240V
The IBM 9331-011 is an 8-inch external floppy disk drive in a self-contained desktop enclosure, designed for IBM midrange systems that required 8-inch media. The internal drive mechanism is a Yasuda YD-180 formatted to 1.2MB. The unit connects to a host system via a 50-pin Centronics-style interface and draws power through a standard IEC C14 inlet with universal voltage support.

Applications
The IBM 9331 external 8-inch floppy drive was designed to connect to IBM midrange systems — including the System/36, System/38, and early AS/400 configurations — that used 8-inch diskette media for program loading, data transfer, and system saves. Eight-inch floppy drives were a standard storage medium on IBM's midrange and mainframe platforms from the mid-1970s through the early 1990s, before 5.25-inch and then 3.5-inch diskettes took over. By the early-to-mid 1990s, 8-inch drives were already a legacy medium, though units like the 9331 continued to see service in long-running installations. Today, these drives are sought primarily by collectors of vintage IBM equipment and by operators who still maintain legacy IBM midrange hardware requiring 8-inch media for archival, data migration, or system maintenance purposes. The universal 100–240V power supply makes this unit compatible with both North American and international installations.
This IBM 9331-011 8-inch external floppy drive is in very good cosmetic condition — the interior of the enclosure is exceptionally clean, and it's possible this unit was never put into service. The exterior shows only minor surface marks consistent with storage. It has been powered on and confirmed to power up normally; however, we do not have a compatible IBM midrange system on hand to perform a full functional read/write test, so it is sold with that limitation noted. The rear IEC power inlet and 50-pin Centronics interface connector are intact and undamaged. Photos shown are of the actual unit. Please review our photo set and contact us if you have any questions.
