Applications
Token Ring was IBM's proprietary LAN technology, standardized under IEEE 802.5, widely deployed in corporate and institutional networks from the mid-1980s through the late 1990s. Unlike Ethernet's contention-based access, Token Ring used a token-passing protocol over a logical ring topology, which provided deterministic performance — a key advantage in environments where predictable network latency mattered. The MCA (Microchannel Architecture) bus was introduced with the IBM PS/2 line in 1987 as a proprietary 32-bit replacement for the ISA bus, offering bus mastering and auto-configuration features well ahead of ISA's capabilities. This adapter was designed for IBM PS/2 systems and other MCA-based machines used in those corporate IBM network environments. Today these cards are sought by collectors and administrators maintaining legacy IBM PS/2 hardware, Token Ring lab environments, and vintage computing systems. The MCA bus and Token Ring standard are both discontinued technologies, making working examples like this increasingly hard to find.
