Description

IBM 66X2588 9253 V24 Communications Card 3174 Control Unit Module

The IBM 66X2588 is a V.24 (V24) communications plug-in card designed for the IBM 3174 Establishment Controller. The card is identified by part number 66X2588, with a secondary assembly number ECA36771A visible on the label.

Applications

The IBM 3174 Establishment Controller was IBM's primary cluster controller for connecting groups of 3270-family terminals to IBM mainframes running SNA (Systems Network Architecture) environments in the 1980s and 1990s. It replaced the earlier 3274 controller and was widely deployed in large enterprises, banks, government agencies, and universities running IBM System/370, 4300, and ES/9000 mainframes. The V.24 communications card (9253) adds a synchronous serial V.24 port to the 3174, used for direct connections to modems, multiplexers, or other DTE/DCE devices on the wide-area network side of the SNA link. This type of card is sought today by legacy IBM system maintainers, SNA network historians, and collectors preserving functional IBM mainframe environments.
