Applications

The IBM Personal System/2 Model 8550 was part of IBM's PS/2 line introduced in 1987, a generation of business desktops that moved away from the original PC/XT/AT architecture and introduced the Micro Channel Architecture (MCA) bus, along with the 3.5-inch floppy disk as standard. The 8550 used a 10 MHz Intel 80286 processor and was aimed at business and corporate desktop deployments. Power supplies for the PS/2 line used a proprietary form factor and connector pinout incompatible with standard ATX supplies, so a direct OEM replacement like this is the correct solution for restoring or maintaining an 8550 system. These machines remain in use among IBM PS/2 collectors and legacy industrial or institutional environments that still operate original PS/2-era hardware. The wide-range AC input (100–240V) also makes this supply usable in international settings without a step-down transformer.
