Applications
The IBM 7331 series tape library was designed for mid-range and departmental server environments requiring automated, unattended tape backup. In the 1990s, 8mm tape (based on Exabyte technology) was a dominant format for high-capacity backup in Unix workstations, IBM RS/6000, and similar mid-range systems — offering significantly more capacity per cartridge than QIC or DAT formats of the time. A library like the 7331-205 allowed IT departments to run multi-tape backup jobs overnight without operator attendance, with the robotic picker cycling through up to 20 cartridges automatically. While 8mm tape has been superseded by LTO in modern environments, these libraries remain in use today for legacy data recovery, long-term archive access, and maintaining continuity in older IBM AIX or RS/6000-based installations where 8mm media is still in the workflow.
This IBM 7331-205 8mm SCSI Tape Library has been inspected and is in good working condition. The library function operates correctly, and the digital LCD screen with menu functions is fully operational. The unit is clean and shows very little sign of use — cosmetically it presents well with no notable damage. Please view our photo set and contact us if you have any questions.
