Applications
The IBM Model M2 is part of IBM's highly regarded Model M keyboard family, produced under license and manufactured by Lexmark after IBM divested its keyboard manufacturing operations in the early 1990s. These keyboards were designed for IBM PS/2 systems and the wide range of PS/2-compatible IBM-compatible PCs prevalent throughout the late 1980s and 1990s. The PS/2 connector became the dominant PC keyboard interface of that era, and this keyboard works with any system featuring a PS/2 keyboard port — including many systems still in service today, and modern systems via a PS/2-to-USB adapter. The Model M2 shares the iconic IBM keyboard lineage known for its tactile buckling-spring or membrane switch mechanisms, and these keyboards remain popular with collectors and legacy system maintainers who prize the quality and build of IBM-era peripherals. The 101-key layout introduced function key rows above the alphanumeric block, a separate cursor cluster, and a numeric keypad — the standard layout that became universal for PC keyboards from the mid-1980s onward.
This IBM 60G0817 101-Key PS/2 Keyboard (Model M2, manufactured by Lexmark) is in good used condition and was pulled from a working environment where it was previously in use. The housing shows light yellowing typical of keyboards from this era, with some general surface soiling visible on the keycaps. One keycap (F6) was removed for the inspection photo to show the switch mechanism underneath — the keycap is included with the keyboard. The coiled PS/2 cable appears intact with no visible damage.
