Applications
The IBM 3174 Cluster Controller was a central component of IBM mainframe terminal networks from the mid-1980s through the 1990s, serving as the gateway between IBM 3270-family coaxial terminals and an IBM mainframe host running SNA/SDLC. The TMA coaxial feature card like this 53F5392 expanded the 3174's terminal attachment capacity, allowing a single controller to serve up to eight additional coaxial terminal connections — IBM 3178, 3179, 3180, 3191, 3192, and similar 3270-class displays and printers. The 3174 and its feature cards were a mainstay of data center and administrative computing environments running IBM System/370, 308x, 3090, and AS/400-adjacent host systems. Today, 3174 cards are sought by organizations maintaining legacy SNA environments, as well as by collectors and historians of IBM computing infrastructure. This card dates from the late-1980s to early-1990s era of proprietary coaxial terminal networking, prior to the broad adoption of token ring and Ethernet LAN-based terminal emulation.
This IBM 53F5392 3174 TMA 8-Port Coax Feature Card has been inspected and shows normal wear consistent with prior use in an enterprise environment. The 8 BNC coaxial connectors and the card edge connector appear intact with no obvious damage. The card's black housing shows minor surface scuffs and some light soiling typical of pulled surplus equipment. No cracks, broken connectors, or missing components are observed. This card has not been bench-tested at our facility; it is sold as inspected used surplus. Please view our photo set and contact us if you have any questions.
