Description

IBM 53F4634 ISA 3270 Coax Emulation Card Toshiba T9444B 8-Bit PC ISA Bus

The IBM 53F4634 is an 8-bit ISA expansion card that provides IBM 3270 coaxial terminal emulation for IBM-compatible PC/XT/AT desktop computers. It connects via a BNC coax port on the card bracket, allowing the host PC to communicate with IBM 3274 cluster controllers and access IBM mainframe or midrange systems running 3270 display sessions — replacing the need for a dedicated 3270 terminal. The main controller is a Toshiba T9444B (marked 10F0291), with supporting logic on a compact single-slot ISA form factor board.

Applications

IBM 3270 emulation cards like the 53F4634 were used throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s to give standard IBM PC/XT/AT-class desktop computers direct connectivity to IBM mainframe environments via coaxial cable. In a typical setup, the card connected to an IBM 3274 or compatible cluster controller over coax, and 3270 emulation software running on the PC presented one or more 3270 display sessions — effectively turning the PC into a 3270 terminal without requiring separate dedicated hardware. This was a common arrangement in banking, insurance, government, and large enterprise environments that ran IBM System/370, System/390, or AS/400 host applications. The 8-bit ISA bus interface means this card is compatible with PC/XT and PC/AT motherboards, as well as later ISA-slot systems. Today these cards are sought by legacy system maintainers keeping aging IBM host environments running, and by vintage computing collectors restoring period-accurate IBM PC workstation setups from the early 1990s era.
