Applications
The IBM PS/2 line, introduced in 1987, moved away from the earlier PC/XT/AT architecture and used a proprietary Micro Channel Architecture (MCA) bus. IBM's external storage peripherals for the PS/2 used a parallel RS449 interface — a non-standard approach that required a dedicated IBM Diskette Adapter Card installed inside the PS/2 host. The 4869 was used to add a second 5.25-inch 360KB floppy drive externally, which was important during the transition era when 5.25-inch media was still common and the PS/2's internal bays used 3.5-inch drives. Today these drives are sought by collectors and by organizations maintaining legacy PS/2 systems that need to read or archive 5.25-inch diskette media. Compatible IBM PS/2 systems include the Model 50, 60, 70, 80, and related machines equipped with an appropriate diskette adapter card.
This IBM 4869 External 5.25" Floppy Drive has been tested and is in good working condition. The unit shows normal cosmetic wear consistent with its age, including light yellowing of the beige plastic housing — typical for equipment of this era. The drive bay doors and red power switch are intact. The RS449 37-pin interface cable is included. Note that this drive requires an IBM Diskette Adapter Card (such as FRU 15F7996) to connect to an IBM PS/2 host — that adapter card is NOT included.
