Applications
The IBM 4683 was IBM's dedicated point-of-sale terminal family introduced in the mid-1980s, widely deployed in retail stores, supermarkets, and hospitality settings through the late 1980s and 1990s. The 4683 terminal used a proprietary bus architecture that integrated the receipt printer directly into the system via a single combined power/data cable, which is why no standalone power supply existed for the printer — it required the 4683 host unit to function. These printers are primarily sought today as replacement or spare units for sites still maintaining legacy IBM 4683 POS installations, or as a source of mechanical parts such as the print head assembly, platen roller, paper feed mechanism, and chassis components. The 4683 series also included the IBM 4684 and related POS peripherals, all part of IBM's retail systems product line from that era.
