Applications

The HIRD-B2 is a first-generation Hughes DSS receiver from the mid-1990s, produced when DirecTV launched its direct-broadcast satellite (DBS) television service in 1994. DSS was a joint standard developed by Hughes Electronics and Thomson Consumer Electronics, and the HIRD-B2 was among the early IRD units designed to receive the 18-inch DirecTV dish signal. These receivers were used in residential settings to receive hundreds of channels of digital cable-quality video and CD-quality audio without a cable subscription. While DirecTV has since moved to newer receiver hardware and access card systems, early DSS units like the HIRD-B2 are collected by vintage consumer electronics enthusiasts and may retain limited functionality on legacy satellite configurations. The unit is also of interest to collectors of 1990s-era consumer electronics and early digital television technology.
