Applications
The HP JetDirect 400N is designed for HP LaserJet printers equipped with an MIO expansion slot — a proprietary high-speed internal interface HP introduced in the late 1980s and used throughout the 1990s on workgroup and enterprise LaserJet models, including the LaserJet 4, 4Plus, 4M, 5, 5N, 5M, 8000, 8100, and many others. By installing a JetDirect MIO card, network administrators could place a printer directly on the LAN at full network speed without the latency or single-port bottleneck of an external print server box. The inclusion of both RJ-45 (10/100) and BNC (10Base-2 coax) ports on this card made it especially useful during the network transition era of the mid-to-late 1990s, when many offices were migrating from older coax Ethernet segments to twisted-pair structured cabling. Today these cards are still sought by administrators maintaining legacy HP LaserJet fleets, as well as collectors and enthusiasts preserving period-correct network printing setups.
This HP JetDirect 400N J4100A MIO Network Card has not been powered up or tested at our facility, but it was pulled from a working environment where it was previously in use. The card appears to be in good used condition with normal wear consistent with prior installation. The PCB, faceplate, RJ-45 port, and BNC connector all appear intact with no visible damage.
