Applications
The HP JetDirect EX series was introduced in the early-to-mid 1990s to solve a common problem in offices migrating to networked printing: parallel-port printers had no built-in network interface, requiring either a dedicated PC spooler or an external device like this one. The J2382B plugs directly into the printer's parallel port and onto the Ethernet segment, making the printer a true network node addressable by IP, IPX, or AppleTalk. The dual BNC/RJ45 design was practical during the transition from 10Base-2 coaxial cabling to structured 10Base-T wiring — a network could have both cable types running simultaneously, and the JetDirect EX bridged them without a separate hub tap. These units were widely deployed with HP LaserJet printers in small business and enterprise environments running Novell NetWare, early Windows NT/2000, and Mac networks. Today they remain useful in legacy lab and industrial settings where an older parallel-port printer needs to serve a small network without a print-spooler PC.
This HP J2382B JetDirect EX external print server has been inspected and appears to be in good used condition. The housing shows light surface wear consistent with normal office use.
