Applications
HP-IB, also marketed as GPIB (General Purpose Interface Bus) and standardized as IEEE-488, was Hewlett-Packard's instrument control bus, introduced in the early 1970s and adopted as an international standard by the late 1970s. ISA-slot GPIB cards like the E2071/82341 were the standard way to add instrument control capability to desktop PCs through the ISA era of the late 1980s and 1990s, enabling automated test systems, production-line calibration rigs, and bench-level data acquisition setups. A PC equipped with this card can address up to 15 GPIB instruments on a single bus and issue commands via SCPI or instrument-specific command sets. These cards remain in demand today for maintaining legacy automated test equipment (ATE) systems, running vintage HP/Agilent instrument setups, and supporting older industrial or defense test environments where ISA-bus PCs are still in service.
