The HP (Hewlett-Packard) / Agilent 8746B is a microwave S-Parameter Test Set designed to measure all four S-parameters (S11, S12, S21, S22) of two-port RF and microwave devices across a frequency range of 0.5 to 12.4 GHz. It functions as a wideband RF power divider and reflectometer, incorporating a calibrated line stretcher for reference plane extension and a front-panel selectable incident signal attenuator (0 to 70 dB). The 8746B also provides an internal DC bias capability for characterizing active two-port devices such as amplifiers and transistors without an external bias tee.

Applications

The HP 8746B S-Parameter Test Set is an accessory designed for use with HP / Agilent swept-frequency network analyzer systems — primarily paired with instruments such as the HP 8410 series network analyzer mainframe to enable full two-port S-parameter characterization. It was widely used in RF and microwave laboratories, defense electronics, semiconductor device characterization, amplifier design, and antenna and filter development during the era of HP swept-frequency analysis (1970s–1990s). The 8411A Harmonic Frequency Converter it includes extends coverage to 12.4 GHz, making the system suitable for characterizing components through X-band. Labs maintaining or servicing legacy HP 8410-series network analyzer setups, as well as engineers performing research on microwave passive and active components, are the primary users of this equipment today.
