Applications
The DeskJet Plus line was introduced in the early 1990s as Hewlett-Packard's mid-range inkjet printer platform, serving home offices, small businesses, and departments within larger organizations. Font cartridges like the 22706R were essential accessories for users who needed access to a wider range of professional typefaces and special character sets for business documents, publishing, and design work. These cartridges contained ROM (read-only memory) chips with permanently stored font data, making additional fonts instantly available without consuming printer RAM or requiring font downloads from the computer. The DeskJet Plus era was a foundational period in the transition from legacy dot-matrix and daisy-wheel systems to modern inkjet technology, and font cartridges were a standard way to extend printer capabilities during that time. Today, legacy DeskJet Plus systems remain in occasional use in retro computing environments, archives, and nostalgia-driven setups.
