The Granville Phillips 270 is a rackmount high-vacuum ion gauge controller designed to measure and control pressure across 8 decades of vacuum — from atmospheric rough vacuum down to 1×10⁻⁸ Torr. It combines two independent thermocouple (TC) gauge channels for rough/medium vacuum measurement with a hot-cathode ionization gauge channel for high-vacuum measurement, all in a single 2U rackmount instrument. Two independent set points on each gauge type (TC and ion gauge) allow automated process control over the full pressure range. Applications

The Granville Phillips 270 is used in high-vacuum and ultra-high-vacuum process systems where continuous pressure monitoring and automated process control are required across a wide dynamic range. It is widely used in thin-film physical vapor deposition (PVD) systems — including sputtering and evaporation systems — as well as in semiconductor processing equipment, electron beam systems, and general research vacuum chambers. The dual thermocouple channels handle the rough-pump-down phase (from atmosphere to the millitorr range), while the hot-cathode ion gauge takes over as the system reaches high vacuum. The independent set points on each channel allow interlock or valve-control logic to be driven directly from the controller. Granville Phillips (later Heliox, now part of Brooks Automation / MKS Instruments) produced this series from the 1970s through the 1990s; the Model 270 is a widely recognized instrument in academic and industrial vacuum labs, and spare ion gauge tubes and thermocouple heads remain available from multiple suppliers.
