The Global Solar P3 Portable Power Pack is a 42-watt foldable CIGS thin-film solar panel developed by Global Solar Energy for the US military as a lightweight 12-volt battery charger. It is clad in US Army woodland camouflage fabric and encapsulated with ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene), a fluoropolymer coating more durable and weather-resistant than the PET or EVA films used in most consumer folding panels. This is new old stock — unused and undeployed, held in conditioned storage since 2014.

CIGS Sun-Soaking Note
This panel will produce approximately 50% of rated output straight out of storage — this is a normal, well-documented characteristic of CIGS thin-film technology, not a defect. After 2 days of exposure to direct sunlight (simply lay it flat outdoors), the panel recovers to its full rated output. Global Solar reported less than a 1% return rate annually across all P3 modules sold.
Applications
Global Solar developed the P3 Portable Power Pack specifically as a field-deployable 12V battery charger for the US military, where low weight, foldability, and durability under harsh environmental conditions were the primary design requirements. CIGS thin-film technology was chosen because it produces usable power in lower-light and overcast conditions compared to crystalline silicon panels, making it better suited to field operations where full direct sun cannot be guaranteed. The woodland camo exterior allows the panel to be used with reduced visual signature. Beyond military use, the P3 is well suited for vehicle battery maintenance, overlanding, camping, and emergency preparedness — any application where a lightweight, packable 12V charging source is needed. The ETFE surface coating resists UV degradation, abrasion, and moisture better than most consumer-grade folding panel encapsulants, making this panel genuinely long-lived in outdoor use.

As is normal with all CIGS thin-film panels that have been in long-term storage, this panel will output approximately 50% of its rated capacity straight out of the box. Full rated output is restored after 2 days of sun soaking — simply lay the panel out in direct sunlight. This behavior is a well-documented characteristic of CIGS technology and is not a defect.
