Applications

Quarter-inch cartridge (QIC) tape was the dominant data backup format for personal computers and small business systems from the early 1980s through the mid-1990s. QIC drives and media were widely used with DOS, early Windows, and Unix-based workstations for routine data backup, archiving, and disaster recovery. The format was championed by a wide range of manufacturers including Colorado Memory Systems, Tandberg, Archive, Wangtek, and Iomega, and became standardized through the QIC Committee. A 450-foot tape at this width is consistent with mid-range QIC capacities such as QIC-150 (150 MB) or QIC-120 (120 MB), depending on the drive and recording density used. These tapes are still sought today for legacy data recovery, maintaining operational legacy backup systems, and archival purposes where older QIC-format drives remain in service.
