Applications
The General Instrument DSR 1500 belongs to the DigiCipher family of professional satellite receivers widely deployed in cable television headends, broadcast facilities, and satellite uplink/downlink operations during the 1990s and early 2000s. DigiCipher was General Instrument's proprietary digital video compression and conditional access system — a precursor to the MPEG-2 standards later adopted industry-wide. These receivers were used to decode encrypted satellite feeds distributed by programmers to cable operators and broadcast affiliates, decrypting and outputting baseband video and audio for local distribution or re-encoding. The DSR 1500 specifically supported professional broadcast environments requiring L-Band input, multiple simultaneous video outputs, and remote management via the rear data/control port. General Instrument's satellite and cable division was later acquired by Motorola, and the DigiCipher platform was eventually succeeded by modern MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 IRDs. Units like this are still sought after by legacy cable system operators maintaining older infrastructure and by collectors and engineers working with period broadcast equipment.
This General Instrument DSR 1500 DigiCipher satellite receiver could not be tested and is being sold AS-IS for parts or repair. No functionality is guaranteed. The unit is in 2U rackmount form with the front panel, module bays, and rear connectors intact and appearing complete. The rear panel shows the AC inlet, circuit breaker, BNC video outputs, RJ-11 remote port, and DB25 data connector all present. Cosmetically the chassis shows typical used wear consistent with rack service life. Please view our photo set and contact us if you have any questions.
