DigiCipher was General Instrument's proprietary digital video compression and conditional access system — a precursor to the MPEG-2 standards later adopted industry-wide. These receivers were used to decode encrypted satellite feeds distributed by programmers to cable operators and broadcast affiliates, decrypting and outputting baseband video and audio for local distribution or re-encoding. The DSR 1500 specifically supported professional broadcast environments requiring L-Band input, multiple simultaneous video outputs, and remote management via the rear data/control port.
