Applications

The EPS 601 was designed for the full range of standard gel electrophoresis techniques used in molecular biology and biochemistry labs. It is suited for SDS-PAGE and Native PAGE (polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis for protein separation), agarose gel electrophoresis for DNA and RNA analysis, DNA pulsed-field electrophoresis, DNA fragment separation, DNA submarine electrophoresis, and electroblotting (Western blot transfer). The automatic parameter-switching feature makes it particularly practical for runs where conductivity in the gel system changes over time, allowing the instrument to maintain the target separation conditions without manual intervention. GE Healthcare (formerly Amersham Biosciences and Pharmacia) produced this instrument for academic, pharmaceutical, and clinical research labs; the EPS series became a widely used platform in protein and nucleic acid research workflows from the late 1990s onward and remains in active use in labs running legacy electrophoresis protocols.
