Applications
The Promise Ultra66 was a popular IDE controller upgrade in the late 1990s and early 2000s, a period when ATA-66 hard drives were becoming standard but many motherboards still shipped with older ATA-33 onboard controllers. Adding this card to a PCI slot instantly unlocked the full throughput of newer ATA-66 drives. Gateway bundled it as an OEM option in several of their desktop lines, giving systems the ability to run additional IDE hard drives or optical drives beyond the two channels provided by the motherboard. Today these cards remain useful for vintage PC builds, retro gaming setups, and legacy system maintenance where PCI slots are available and additional IDE devices need to be connected.
