The FutureTel Video Sphinx Pro is an external MPEG-1 video capture and encoding device for Windows PCs. It connects via the parallel port and accepts S-Video and composite video inputs, allowing users to capture analog video directly from camcorders, VCRs, and other video sources and encode it to MPEG-1 format on the fly. The unit also accepts audio input and ships with MPEG-1 editing software for cut-and-paste video assembly on the desktop.

The Sphinx Pro targeted home users and small studios looking to archive home video, produce VCDs, or edit short video clips without investing in a full non-linear editing workstation. At its 1998 launch, MPEG-1 hardware encoders of this kind occupied a niche between software-only encoding (slow on period hardware) and expensive professional MPEG-2 systems. Today this unit is primarily of interest to collectors of late-1990s multimedia computing hardware and to those maintaining period-accurate PC multimedia systems.
This FutureTel Video Sphinx Pro MPEG-1 capture unit (model 809-00077) has been inspected and appears to be in good used condition. It has not been powered up or tested at our facility, but it comes with its original retail box, software CD, user manual, cords, and DVE switching power supply — all visible and accounted for in the photos.
