Description

F&B/CECO Vintage 35mm Film Splicer Motion Picture Equipment Pedestal Stand

This is a vintage pedestal-mounted 35mm film splicer produced under the F&B/CECO Inc. brand, the well-known New York City motion picture equipment dealer that operated at 315 West 43rd Street in the heart of Manhattan's film industry district. The splicer is a heavy, floor-standing unit built on a cast iron base with a tall vertical column, spring-loaded arms, a motorized or mechanically actuated splicing head, a splicing gate with registration block, and a foot pedal control — the configuration typical of professional cinema lab and editing room splicers from the mid-20th century. A red component label is visible on the splicing head assembly.

Applications

Film splicers of this type were standard equipment in professional motion picture labs, editing rooms, and post-production facilities from the 1930s through the 1970s. They were used to join cut sections of 35mm film using cement splicing — a technique where a small overlap of film is scraped, coated with film cement, and pressed together under heat and pressure to form a permanent bond. Pedestal-style splicers like this one were common in high-volume lab environments where editors and negative cutters worked standing at the machine rather than seated at a flatbed editing table. F&B/CECO Inc. was one of the premier motion picture equipment dealers and rental houses in the United States, serving the New York film industry from their 43rd Street location; equipment bearing their nameplate was used in professional production and post-production throughout the mid-20th century. Today, these machines are sought by film collectors, cinematography historians, prop collectors, working film archivists, and institutions maintaining 35mm projection and preservation capabilities. The unit's pedestal construction, cast iron build quality, and complete mechanical assembly make it a substantial and representative example of professional film editing infrastructure from Hollywood's classical era.

Condition: Used
This F&B/CECO vintage pedestal-mount 35mm film splicer has been inspected and appears to be in usable condition overall, though it shows significant age-related patina consistent with a piece of mid-20th-century industrial film equipment. The cast iron body, column, and base carry heavy surface rust and worn black paint throughout — visible across the column arms, spring tensioners, foot pads, and base plate. The upper splicing head mechanism shows rust and worn brass components, but the mechanical assembly appears intact and present. The splicing gate and registration block are in place. The power cord and 3-prong plug are attached, though the plug shows corrosion and age. A small red label (appears to be a component label) is visible on the splicing head body. This is a floor-standing, pedestal-mounted unit and requires local pickup or freight shipping — it is not suitable for standard parcel delivery.
