Applications
The Exabyte 8500 series was a mainstream backup tape solution throughout the mid-1990s, widely deployed in Unix workstations, Sun Microsystems servers, SGI systems, HP-UX machines, and Windows NT servers that included SCSI host adapters. The 8mm format (based on the Video8 cassette standard) offered high capacity at a competitive cost compared to QIC and DLT alternatives of the period, making it a common choice for departmental and mid-range server backup. These drives are still sought after by administrators maintaining legacy Unix/SCSI environments, as well as collectors and data-recovery professionals needing to read archived 8mm tape media from that generation. Exabyte recommended using only EXATAPE-brand 8mm cleaning and data cartridges for reliable operation, as noted on the front-panel label.
This Exabyte EXB-8500S 8mm SCSI Internal Tape Drive has been inspected and appears to be in good used condition. It was pulled from a working environment where it was previously in service. The unit shows normal cosmetic wear consistent with prior use, including light scuffing on the housing. The SCSI connector and 4-pin power connector on the rear appear intact and undamaged.
