Applications
The Exabyte 8mm tape drive format was a dominant backup medium in the Unix workstation and server market throughout the late 1980s and 1990s. Exabyte based their drives on the 8mm videocassette tape mechanism (originally developed by Sony), adapting it for data storage to deliver high capacity at a relatively low cost compared to competing formats like DAT/DDS or QIC. The EXB-8500 series was widely used with Sun Microsystems, HP, SGI, IBM, and DEC workstations and servers — systems that commonly shipped with or supported an internal 5.25" SCSI bay. These drives are still sought by administrators and collectors maintaining legacy Unix/SCSI systems, as well as by anyone needing to read or restore data from existing 8mm tape archives. Compatible media is Exabyte 8mm (8200 or 8500 series cartridges); Exabyte recommended using only EXATAPE-branded media for reliable operation.
This Exabyte EXB-8500CS 8mm SCSI Internal Tape Drive was pulled from a working environment where it was previously in use. It has not been powered up or tested at our facility. The unit is in good cosmetic shape overall — the dark gray housing shows normal handling wear consistent with prior service use. The front tape slot and indicator LEDs appear intact, and the rear 50-pin SCSI and power connectors look clean with no visible damage.
