The Exabyte EXB-8200 is an 8mm helical-scan external tape drive housed in a standalone desktop enclosure. It uses the 8mm Data8/Exabyte tape format and connects to a host system via SCSI, making it compatible with a wide range of workstations and servers that were standard in professional data-center and workstation environments. Applications
The Exabyte EXB-8200 was introduced in the late 1980s and quickly became a standard backup solution for Unix workstations and midrange servers throughout the 1990s. It was widely used with Sun Microsystems, HP, SGI, IBM RS/6000, and DEC systems, as well as SCSI-equipped PCs running DOS, early Windows, and Unix variants. The 8mm helical-scan format offered significantly higher capacity than the competing QIC cartridge formats of the era, making Exabyte drives a go-to choice for system administrators backing up large file servers and engineering workstations. Today these drives remain sought after for reading legacy 8mm backup tapes, archiving old data, and restoring systems from period-correct media. They are a staple in legacy IT recovery and data archaeology workflows.
This Exabyte EXB-8200 8mm External SCSI Tape Drive has been pulled from a working environment where it was previously in use. It has not been powered up or tested at our facility. The enclosure shows light surface wear consistent with normal use — the beige casing is intact with no cracks or major damage visible.
